Tangsteel Achieves Breakthrough in Ultra-Thin High-Carbon Steel Production for Agricultural Machinery Lightweighting

Hebei, China, January 19, 2026 – Tangsteel, a subsidiary of HBIS Group, has successfully rolled out 120 tons of 2.0mm ultra-thin high-carbon tool steel 65Mn, marking a significant milestone in the development of lightweight agricultural equipment. The product, with exceptional dimensional accuracy and surface quality, has passed rigorous thermal-rolling performance tests and will be deployed in the manufacturing of advanced farm tools.

Why High-Carbon Steel Matters

High-carbon steel, known for its hardness and wear resistance, is widely used in automotive components, agricultural machinery, and industrial equipment. Its carbon content typically ranges from 0.60% to 1.70%, enabling superior strength after heat treatment (quenching and tempering). However, its brittleness and low ductility pose challenges for ultra-thin applications, making this breakthrough a critical advancement for industries prioritizing weight reduction without compromising durability.

Tangsteel’s Innovation

To overcome the inherent difficulties in producing thin high-carbon steel—such as high hardness and susceptibility to cracking during rolling—Tangsteel’s Hot Rolling Division collaborated with its Technology Center and Information Automation Department. Key innovations included:

  • Precision Heating Control‌: Optimized thermal parameters to ensure uniform material properties.
  • Enhanced Surface Treatment‌: Upgraded descaling processes to prevent surface defects.
  • Equipment Reliability‌: Proactive maintenance of rolling mills, cooling systems, and coiling units to guarantee stable production.

These efforts resulted in a product that meets stringent industry standards while supporting the global trend toward lighter, more efficient agricultural machinery.

Industry Impact

The success of this project highlights Tangsteel’s commitment to pushing material boundaries. As demand grows for high-performance steels in sectors like renewable energy and precision engineering, ultra-thin high-carbon variants are poised to play a pivotal role in reducing energy consumption and enhancing product lifespan.
